Litchfield is located 16 miles southwest of Augusta, in southern Kennebec County. It is a rural/suburban town, with 37 square miles and an annual growth rate of over 3 percent for the past 25 years. Litchfield has a small commercial village area at the north end of Woodbury Pond. This pond, as well as several smaller ponds and Cobbosseecontee Stream, account for 1/4 of the town's housing stock in the form of seasonal homes. The Maine Turnpike traverses Litchfield without an interchange.
