Oakland is located in northern Kennebec County, immediately west of Waterville. It is primarily a residential suburb, though it hosts quite a bit of seasonal development along the frontage of Messalonskee Lake, Salmon Lake, McGrath Pond, and East Pond. Messalonskee Stream runs through the mid-sized commercial downtown. Primary routes are State Highways 11 and 137, Kennedy Memorial Drive, with an I-95 interchange just east of the eastern boundary. The "Back Road" of the Springfield Terminal Railroad passes through town as well. The town is 27 square miles in extent.
