Regional
Transportation Needs Assessment
At the direction of MaineDOT (Maine Department of Transportation), Kennebec
Valley Council of Governments has embarked on a planning process to gauge transportation
needs in the Kennebec-Somerset Region. This process is separate from the identification
and prioritization of projects for road and bridge improvements. Instead, the
plan divides the region up into a series of transportation corridors, and looks
at the overall transportation needs and issues on each corridor.
The plan goes
further than transportation planning has gone in the past, by also
examining the land use and economic trends along the corridors.
The plan identifies plans for development throughout the corridor
- from locally-planned growth areas to regional Pine Tree Development
Zones and industrial parks - and how they will place demands on
the future of the transportation system. It then lays out a series
of objectives for land use and economic development, as they relate
to transportation.
